Most homeowners never think about what's happening under their house. Out of sight, out of mind - until the airflow gets weak, certain rooms won't cool down, or the utility bills start creeping up for no obvious reason. That's usually when we get the call.

Here's what we were working with on this one. The existing sheet metal ductwork in the crawl space had corroded heavily - rust had eaten through sections of the metal and the ducts had started to separate at the joints. When ducts break down like this, conditioned air leaks out before it ever reaches the vents in your living space. Your system runs harder, your home stays uncomfortable, and the problem only gets worse the longer it sits.

Working in a tight crawl space is not easy. There's not much room to move, and the conditions down there are rough. But getting in and doing it right is the only way to fix it properly. We pulled the deteriorated sections, fit new metal duct pieces in, and sealed the connections tight. You can see the new vapor barrier running across the crawl space floor throughout the work - that's not just there by accident. Moisture is often a big reason ducts corrode in the first place, and a proper vapor barrier helps keep that crawl space environment under control so the new work lasts.

If you've got rooms that just won't get comfortable no matter what your thermostat is set to, or you've noticed your system running constantly, it's worth having someone take a look under the house. Damaged ductwork is one of the most common and most overlooked causes of HVAC inefficiency - and it doesn't fix itself.
